The Rotary Club of Port Fairy has extended its Literacy Support Program by continuing to provide books to the parents of new born babies in Port Fairy with book purchases in March 2014 being supplemented by further funding being approved in October when another 29 books will be delivered th the local community centre.

In March, Rotarian, Diana Bracegirdle, delivered some thirty books to the Moyne Shire Community Services Centre in Port Fairy who manage the distribution of the books to the newborns.

The Literacy Support Program has been running for quite a number of years and a brochure inserted in the book package outlines the value of parents reading to their children from a very early age.  The value of this was recently highlighted in a news article by a prominent educationalist who identified that children who are read to on a daily basis, from  an early age, perform better when they get to school.

The brochure included with each book also congratulates the parents on the birth of their child and offers the book as a gift from the Rotary Club.

The recent purchase of the books to cover the next 6 months is timely in that March was Literary Month in Rotary.  In October 2014 the Rotary Club approved another $150 towards the program to buy new books as a "baby boom" in Port Fairy was quickly running out stocks.
