Members of the Rotary Club of Port Fairy did their bit to help clean up Port Fairy.

Having agreed to take on a community project to help keep tidy the road out to the Golf Club (covering Griffith Street through Skenes Road to Woodbine Road).  The Rotary Club had its first clean-up day on Friday 28th June.

In 2013, the Club had agreed to "adopt" the road as an added responsibility to its existing program of planting and maintaining trees along the roadside - a program that is now showing positive signs as the trees are starting to take hold and will eventually grow to make a good windbreak.

Rotarians Adrian Crosier, Brett Murray, Margaret Broers, Kevin Matthews, Diana Bracegirdle and Harry Bracegirdle, assisted by Moyne Shire Council's Environmental Officer, Richard Hodgens, picked up a good deal of rubbish between Connolly Street and where the road bends towards the Princes Highway.  Due to safety reasons they did not cover the stretch from the bend at the Golf Club to the highway along Woodbine Raod but hope to do this soon once safety signs can be secured.

ImageAlthough Port Fairy proudly boasts the accolade of being the Worlds Most Livable Community, following its recent success in the UN LivComm awards, it cannot, on the basis of the amount of rubbish removed from the roadside, claim to be one of the tidiest towns in the region!

Harry Bracegirdle reported that the amount of rubbish collected from the roadside over a stretch of a few kilometres was disappointing, especially the number of beer cans, glass bottles, plastic water bottles, paper coffee cups and general paper waste that had obviously been discarded by motorists onto the grass verge. Other items found were obviously rubbish falling from trade vehicles or trailers (perhaps on to their way to the tip).

All involved in the clean-up expressed the view that it was a pity that visitors and locals do not take more pride in keeping our roadsides clear of litter and rubbish. Nevertheless, the Rotary Club will continue its program of tidying up this important thoroughfare into Port Fairy so that it looks as good as possible for visitors.  It is expected that the Club will conduct around 4 sessions per year to help keep the roadside clear.
