The Rotary Club of Port Fairy held its annual Winter Trivia Quiz as part of the 2024 Port Fairy Winter Weekends Festival on Saturday 8th June 2024.
The event was held at the Port Fairy Senior Citizen's Rooms. Fifty competitors, making up eight teams, enjoyed a fun few hours testing their mettle over 6 rounds of 10 questions that were set by Rotary's "Quiz Master", Michael Crowe.
A ninth team, comprising the fantastic people working in the kitchen preparing the scrumptious afternoon tea, which was served at the mid-way point, formed an add-on 9th team. The winning team could only be separated by a "quick-fire" tie-breaker round of 5 questions.
The winning team was Sue Robertson's "Great Pretenders" who initially tied with Daph Hester's "Illuminati" team - both scoring 52 points after applying handicaps (based on the number in the team) and a bonus score calculated on what round each team nominated as their "double points" round. The tie-breaker was won by the Great Pretenders 4 to 3. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams.
Everyone seemed to have a great time and the event, along with entry fees and a raffle takings, will raise close to $1450 for the Rotary Club after expenses. These monies will be used to support the Club's community projects in Rotary year 24/25. Although the participants were mainly drawn from Port Fairy we were very grateful for the support of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool (pictured below) who made up a table of six.
Rotarian, John Ellard, did a great job as MC and the catering team was ably led by Rotarian, Jill Gleeson. Our thanks to all the others that assisted on the afternoon and to the sponsors who donated some of the prizes.
A special thank-you to the ladies from the "Friends of Rotary group" (Evaline Jackway, Dianne Walker, Tanyth Moore and Lynda Hughes) who assisted Jill and to those who also donated food for the afternoon tea..
Evaline Jackway, and Diana Bracegirdle assisted Harry Bracegirdle with marking sheets and entering scores into the computer.
