he Rotary Club of Port Fairy was pleased to host our special guest speaker from "Friends of Griffiths Island (FoGI)" at its Dinner Meeting on 18th August at the Stump Hotel.

Our special guest was Sandra Herbert, who delivered an informative presentation on the Friends of Griffiths Island group that carry out a dedicated service to promote the island and to preserve the flora and fauna on the island.

In a short presentation, Sandra explained that FoGI is a dedicated volunteer group committed to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of Griffiths Island.

Her talk outlined the history of Griffiths Island (Moleen), details on the early lighthouse keeping role on the island, birdlife on Griffiths Island, revegetation and weed control, the task to increase native plant diversity and the ever present task involving the removal of introduced species.

Sandra explained that the aim of FoGI is to:
- Develop Griffiths Island as a Sustainable Tourism Destination, - Enhance eco tourism visibility and engagement,
- Develop future tourism strategies as an environmentally and culturally significant destination,
- Promote the island as an avian tourism and wildlife destination,
- Inform the local public about their "Switch off for the Shearwater campaign", and
- Advocate for safe and accessible walkways across Griffiths Island.

In closing, Sandra thanked the Rotary Club for their recent, generous donation of $2000 to help FoGI pursue their aims. Rotary President, Graeme Cox, reciprocated in thanking Sandra for her informative session.
