Shocking Training Session

Shocking Training Session
In recent years Port Fairy Rotary has donated two defibrillators for deployment around the town, one located at the Star of the West hotel and one at the BP Service Station.  Ready access to a defibrillator is critical as time is of the essence for survival.  Two sessions of defibrillator training for staff at the hotel and the BP were organised by the Rotary Club of Port Fairy in consultation with managers, Kathy Matthews of the BP and Caroline Lumley of the Star.  The sessions were ran by local paramedic, Woody Bucci, from Ambulance Victoria who kindly donated his time.

Back on the Street
For many months COVID-19 rules have restricted the Club's ability to raise funds and provide volunteer services to the Port Fairy community.  So it was with great relief and excitement that Port Fairy Rotary was able to return to fund raising activities.  First off was the Christmas hamper raffle, with regular ticket sales taking place in the shopping centre during the weeks leading up to Christmas.  The happy winner was local identity Caroline Crowe, who was reported to be 'chuffed' as she had never won a raffle before.

DG Comes to Town

DG Comes to Town
Rotary District 9780 Governor, Phil Beasley, and his wife Judy recently visited Port Fairy Rotary Club.  Phil outlined the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on Clubs, including on members, families and friends.  Fundraising has been significantly reduced.  Local communities have also been impacted in different ways and it is important for Clubs to determine the particular needs that have arisen locally.  Clubs should review their strategic plans in light of the changed community needs and their lower resources.  New ways of working including joint projects with other clubs should be explored.

Bamboo Blitz

Bamboo Blitz
Bamboo is a useful plant in the right places but the Port Fairy Botanic Gardens is not one of them. Port Fairy Rotary recently undertook the destruction of unwanted bamboo plants in accordance with the Council's Gardens Reserve Master Plan. This work continued the Club's efforts in recent times of assisting with the implementation of the Master Plan, including the planting of Norfolk Island Pines along the river and the installation of garden furniture.

Good Year Despite Challenges

Good Year Despite Challenges
Outgoing President Sue Robertson presented her report on the 2019/20 year at the recent Port Fairy Rotary Changeover dinner.  Sue described the year as comprising two very different parts - normal operation until March this year then a dramatically changed world with the arrival of COVID-19.  The first part was a busy time for the Club with very successful fundraising and service activities. Despite the shutdown of fundraising for the final quarter, the Club was able to distribute over $26,000 to local, national and international good causes.

New President - Tony Bawden
At a dinner meeting this week Tony Bawden was installed as the President of the Port Fairy Rotary Club for the 2020/21 year.  Attendance was limited to 20 because of the COVID 19 rules, nevertheless Tony's elevation was enthusiastically supported.  Tony was inducted by District Governor Philip Beasley, who was accompanied by his partner Judy.

The meeting was streamed live, enabling members of Tony's family and other members and friends to follow proceedings.

Lots of Teas Add Up

Lots of Teas Add Up
The corona virus has curtailed the activities of the Port Fairy Rotary Club in recent months. However the Cancer Council's Biggest Morning Tea has been transformed into lots of little morning teas as a way to raise funds for the Cancer Council during this difficult time. The Cancer Council provides services to Australians affected by cancer, operates the school SunSmart program and contributes $60 million annually to cancer research.  Along with other local organisations, the Club has organised several little teas during June to contribute to this effort. While each event raises a modest amount, it all adds up to big result!

Port Fairy is a historic, intimate harbour village in the south west region of Victoria in Australia.  The town is famous for its annual Folk Music Festival, held in March each year, which has been running for over 40 years and has expanded to include not just folk music but blues and roots music to suit all ages.

Port Fairy is a friendly town that relies greatly on tourism and therefore welcomes visitors from all parts of the globe.  Therefore, if you are visiting Port Fairy, then we invite you to join us at our weekly Rotary Club Dinner meeting held each Monday evening.  Details on meeting times and venue are on the Home page
