Guest Speaker - Olga Lyons

Local school Principal, Olga Lyons, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Port Fairy's meeting at the Stump Hotel on 20th October.

Members of the Rotary Club enjoyed an engaging presentation by St. Pat's School Principal, Olga Lyons, who spoke about her volunteering in Lesotho earlier in 2025. Olga was part of a group of educators who travelled to landlocked Lesotho to conduct "Teach the Teacher" training to local teachers in rural areas of Lesotho.

Members of the Rotary Club of Port Fairy were engaged in their usual role at the Port Fairy Show on Saturday 1st November when they again controlled the gates and collected entry fees. This is a regular community event for the Club.

Additionally, on that weekend, the Club conducted Lighthouse Tours on Griffiths Island and also provided a Sausage Sizzle for the "Skate Jam" at the Port Fairy Skate Park.

These three commitments severely stretched our resources but, with the dedication of Club volunteers, and ably aided by our band of volunteers from the affiliated "Friends of Rotary" group, the Club managed to fulfil all three events.

Rotary Club Fashion Parade 2025 - a whole lotta fun!

The Rotary Club of Port Fairy 2025 Annual Fashion Parade - a whole lotta fun!

The Rotary Club’s Fashion Parade, held in the Presbyterian Church hall in Port Fairy on 19th September, was a huge hit, a whole lot of fun and was well patronised with an estimated 85 ladies turning up to enjoy the parade.

The Fashion Parade was sponsored by Romaines of Port Fairy and coordinated by Brenda Leishman and daughter, Romy, from Romaines.

Rotary Club lends a helping hand to the Port Fairy Women's Weekend.

The Rotary Club of Port Fairy provided valuable assistance to the running of the 2025 Port Fairy Women's Weekend that was held over 23rd and 24th August at the Port Fairy Community House.

The Club provided catering services for this popular event delivering morning, lunch and afternoon teas to the 50 participants, who not only engaged in a wide range of activities over the one and half day event, but also enjoyed camaraderie and friendship whilst enjoying two exceptional winter days of warmth and sunshine in Port Fairy.

Friends of Griffiths Island presentation to Rotary Club

he Rotary Club of Port Fairy was pleased to host our special guest speaker from "Friends of Griffiths Island (FoGI)" at its Dinner Meeting on 18th August at the Stump Hotel.

Our special guest was Sandra Herbert, who delivered an informative presentation on the Friends of Griffiths Island group that carry out a dedicated service to promote the island and to preserve the flora and fauna on the island.

In a short presentation, Sandra explained that FoGI is a dedicated volunteer group committed to the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of Griffiths Island.

The Rotary Club of Port Fairy awarded long-standing volunteer, Peter Gleeson, with a Paul Harris Fellowship at the Club's 2025 Changeover Dinner.

The awarding of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Peter in recognition of his long-standing service to the Club over many years.

Road Safety for Senior drivers

The Rotary Club of Port Fairy hosted a very informative session on "Road Safety for Seniors" at its meeting held on 19th May, 2025 at the Stump Hotel in Port Fairy.

The guest speaker was Gerard Ryan who is the Executive Officer for RoadSafe Central Highlands, which is a community road safety council.

When presenting outside the Central Highlands region, which he does on occasions, Gerard effectively consults for the Community Road Safety programs within the Department of Transport and Planning.

It is with a degree of sadness that the Rotary Club of Port Fairy acknowledges the passing of former Club President, Gordon Harman.

Gordon joined the Rotary Club in 2000 and served until June 2012. He took over the role of President in 2004 at a very challenging time when the Club membership was at an all-time low of some 9 members. He passed on the role in 2004/5 to Alan Rasmussen and between them they gradually restored the membership back towards the long term average membership of around 20.

At its meeting held at the Star of the West Hotel last night, members of the Rotary Club of Port Fairy were delighted when President, Andrew Long, awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship to Bill Moore in recognition of his services to the Club and community.

Rotary Club Changover Dinner 2024

The Rotary Club of Port Fairy held its annual Changeover Dinner for 2024 where, traditionally, the Club Presidency changes hands. However, moving into Rotary year 2024-25, the club will be led by the same joint-presidents that were elected for 23-24.

In this regard, apart for a few minor changes to other Board members, joint Presidents - Jed Macartney and Andrew Long remain at the helm - meaning there was little change going into the new Rotary year. Nevertheless, it was an opportunity for Club members to gather in what was a fairly low key event.

Port Fairy is a historic, intimate harbour village in the south west region of Victoria in Australia. The town is famous for its annual Folk Music Festival, held in March each year, which has been running for over 40 years and has expanded to include not just folk music but blues and roots music to suit all ages. It also has a Winter Weekends Festival running on specific weekends from June to July.

Port Fairy is a friendly town that relies greatly on tourism and therefore welcomes visitors from all parts of the globe.
